unforgettable educational interactions
For most people, meeting Tswale is bucket-list worthy. Standing beside him and having his permission to reach out and make physical contact is so many things…
An immeasurable privilege, an overwhelming joy, an intense communion, that borders on sacred. You cannot remain unaffected by the experience.
Meeting Tswale, is not like encountering a circus elephant – although both have made enormous sacrifices to give humans their time, attention and unapologetic elephant intensity. In his life at Lowhills, Tswale is, in a sense, in rehabilitation. He is no longer required to have anyone riding him, and he is under no obligation to perform entertaining activities. He gets to decide what he would like to do, (and when he would like to do it ;-), and really, this makes these interactions even more special.
Tswale CHOOSES to interact with people. Having spent most of his life around humans, we are irrevocably part of his tribe, and the honor is entirely ours! That this magnificent animal gives us the time of day, and even delights in these encounters is just too precious for words.
But, meeting Tswale is not just about the ‘happy vibes’ – it’s about being educated too. This is your opportunity to have a field lesson on the wonders and amazing intelligence of elephants. Tswale’s human, Amos, has dedicated his life to training and caring for Tswale and Modjaji, and his vast knowledge and experience is astounding and inspiring.
They say not all classrooms have four walls, and the lessons we can learn from Tswale and Amos transcend mere facts.
We won’t tell you that you MUST book an elephant interaction with Tswale. We’ll only tell you that it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience (but you can come back again-)… We’ll tell you that your life will have been enriched by the experience by this mighty ambassador for his species, and that this is an incredibly special memory you can make with your favorite people.
We can also tell you that Tswale would love to meet you 😉
Encounters last around an hour.
Booking is essential.

A definite stop when you visit our beautiful Onderberg.Marianne Buchel2023-01-25Sonel and Tswale has a bond no one can explain. This is a unique and rare sight between two species, and it´s beautiful to see and be a part of. Sonel is a wonderful carer and you can see she loves Tswale deeply. When you see them interact it´s a wonderful sight - two totally different species that live in peace and harmony, respect and understanding. Tswale is an absolute beast and you feel in awe in his presence. He is very gentle and patient with us tiny humans next to him :D I would HIGHLY recommend this experience to anyone who wants to learn, be educated and to get to know these magnificent creatures up close. You will not get this kind of interation anywhere - Tswale is free to roam wherever he wants. From the on set it was clear that Tswales well being was the main focus and priority of our visit. Thank you Sonel and Tswale for a once in a lifetime experience!Danel Vermaak2023-01-24Tswale is the most gentle giant I have ever seen. He is so intelligent and just all round amazing. It was a true spiritual experience and I would recommend anyone and everyone to experience this beautiful African Elephant. Sonell and Amos, thank you for looking after this gorgeous boy, for giving him a safe and comfortable home, where he can be a true Elephant, with lush bushfeld and space to roam freely. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into protecting him.Annatjie Mostert2023-01-24Once in a lifetime experience. Sonell and her team is just absolutely in a class of their own. This is a must visit when you are in the area. To take photos with this gentle giant Twala is something you will cherish forever.Vincent Hoffman2023-01-24Meeting Tswale comes very close to the highlight of my life. His handler Amos was patient with us, answering questions non stop and the love and respect between himself and Tswale was crystal clear. Not once did I sense fear. What a magical afternoon, an African Elephant in the true African Bush. This gentle giant is no trained actor, if he feels like a muddy swim and you want to see him now, be prepared to get wet and dirty! Organizing such a special moment takes a few 'behind the Elephant' special people, to all of you, keep up this good work!
